.@liza on understanding Apple’s fixed-layout EPUBs

Once again Liza Daly demonstrates why the Threepress blog is a must-read for anyone interested in ebook production.

"iBooks now supports an extension to EPUB that allows publishers to create books with precise layout using CSS. This is Apple's own extension, not part of the EPUB specification itself (and not one that they suggested be included in EPUB3). The goal of this post is to simply document the extension and show how to create new works with it. I'm not going to debate whether it's a good thing for the ecosystem here."

.@financialtimes: Nokia to scale back free music service

"Nokia is to stop offering free music downloads with its mobile phones in most markets, signalling a retreat from a service that was once predicted to transform the digital music market . . . It had the backing of all four major music labels . . . which hoped the "all you can eat" concept would help coax consumers away from illegal
downloads."

Fascinating perspective on the appeal of Kindle, by @infovore

"This is a device that always seems content with itself. Just sitting there, not caring if you pick it up or not. Like a book . . . If this device is to replace, for many people, a book, it needs to manifest some of those qualities: safe, nonthreatening, no more distracting than a few hundred of pages of text intend to be. It needs a quiet confidence to make you trust it more."
